5 Nutrition Practices to Stop in 2017

Written By. Stacey Rogers.

There are so many fads that come and go in nutrition each and very year, some are good, majority not. Here are 5 nutrition practices that I would suggest ditching in 2017 to achieve a healthier, long-term attitude towards food.

1.“Cheat Days”

Many diets promote “cheat days” as a way of rewarding the individual for sticking to plan. Yes there have been reported benefits of increased metabolism, however the flipside of this is the increased risk of relapse into original eating patterns. I personally don’t like the term “cheat day”, so for clients wanting to achieve lifestyle goals being mindful of portions and choosing healthier alternative where possible is their best option.

  1. Not reading food labels properly

Knowing what is in your food and what is going into your body is important. Be sure to read food labels and become educated about the products you buy. Avoid any products with ingredients lists filled with numbers and words you don’t have a clue how to pronounce.

  1. Skipping breakfast

Breakfast is the meal that is going to set you up for the day. Not only is it going to kick start your metabolism, breaking the overnight fast, it provides you with the opportunity to kick start the production of certain neurotransmitters in your body that are going to help you start focused and on task throughout the morning. I highly recommend a meat and nuts breakfast. If meat in the morning is not your thing another great option is eggs.

  1. Cutting out carbs

Carbs are not the bad guys and in most cases have a place in your diet. Choosing the right time and having them at an appropriate time is the key.  Complex carbs, think sweet potato, brown rice, quinoa, are your best choice as they are slow to digest and the enter the bloodstream slower than simple carbs (fruit, syrups, white rice). Cutting out carbs increases your risk of fatigue, vitamin B deficiencies and other health issues.

  1. Juicing to ‘detox’

Our body is a natural detoxifier – our liver, kidneys, skin and gut all excrete waste products. It is our job to provide the right nutrients for the detoxification proves to occur. Simply juicing doesn’t include all the nutrients and minerals this process requires. For example, the fibre is removed when you juice vegetables. Fibre is essential for the gut and assists in detoxification, so why would you want to get rid of it? Eating a nutrient-rich diet with good quality protein, fats and complex carbohydrates will help your body carry out these processes.

So there you have it, my top 5 nutrition practices to walk away from as soon as you can in 2017. Address these areas to move towards an even healthier you.
