We use four chemical free sugar alternatives to sweeten our food. Pure maple syrup, dates, fresh fruit and xylitol.
Xylitol is a naturally occurring carbohydrate, that looks and tastes just like regular table sugar. It is a natural sweetener that can be extracted from any woody fibrous plant material. Xylitol is found widely in nature, most of the fruits and vegetables that we eat on a daily basis have small amounts of xylitol.
Xylitol has a delicious, sweet taste, and no unpleasant aftertaste. Xylitol has almost one third the calories as table sugar, and is a healthy alternative for diabetics.Xylitol is slowly absorbed from the digestive tract, and does not cause rapid rises in blood glucose.
Xylitol is generally well tolerated, but some people do get digestive side effects when they consume too much. The sugar alcohols can pull water into the intestine or get fermented by gut bacteria. Over consumption can lead to gas, bloating and diarrhoea. However, the body seems to adjust very well to xylitol. If you increase your intake slowly and give your body time
to adjust, then chances are that you won’t experience any negative effects. There are very low levels of Xylitol found in Health Freak Café menu items allowing you to consume the product without any effects.
A2 milk is cow’s milk that contains only the A2 type of beta-casein protein rather than the more common A1 protein commonly found in regular milk. All regular cows’ milk brands today contain a mix of both A1 and A2 proteins. Only a2 Guernsey Milk comes from cows hand-picked to naturally produce only A2 protein and no A1.
Matcha literally means powdered tea. Matcha is finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea. Because matcha is made from high-quality tea, and the whole leaves are ingested, it’s a more potent source of nutrients than steeped green tea. In addition to providing small amounts of vitamins and minerals, matcha is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which have been tied to protection against heart disease and cancer, as well as better blood sugar regulation, blood pressure reduction, and anti-aging.
